 Wassili Archipow (Russia 1926 - 1998) … was an officer on a Soviet Union submarine floating around in the Sargassosea near to the USA during the Cuba Crisis (1962). Without contact to the Moscow commanding center and under big pressure by the US Navy, the boat commander gave the order to start a nuclear missile (as strong as the Hiroshima bomb) - an action that certainly would have had initiated the Third World War… Archipow blocked the nuclear attack by vetoing it and made the submarine resurface. He never got an official appreciation for his doing by Soviet and Russian authorities. It is very hard to find any written hint on these facts in English...
